Murata and Sensor Platforms Collaborate on MEMS Sensor and PDR Algorithms for Next-Generation Smartphone/Tablet Applications

KYOTO, Japan–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:6981) (ISIN: JP3914400001) (hereinafter “Murata”) and Sensor Platforms, Inc. (hereinafter “SPI”) announced today they have had a collaborative relationship for over three years.

The indoor navigation, activity-monitoring market will become a reality now that Murata and SPI have teamed up. The newly developed best PDR (Pedestrian Dead Reckoning) algorithm by SPI, combined with Murata’s high-accuracy, low-power, low noise MEMS technology (pressure sensor currently under development), will minimize the error over distance traveled, bringing much needed accuracy to the PDR market. It will lead to a first in consumer satisfaction.
By using SPI’s PDR function, customers are able to detect position, utilizing a variety of sensors with their algorithm. With Murata’s MEMS sensor high-accuracy height detection added into this function, it will enable precise Z-axis information, enabling users to freely move around the third dimension world.
Minimum power consumption is always a critical issue for smartphone/tablet devices, however this will also be accomplished by utilizing both Murata’s hardware and SPI’s software.

About Sensor Platforms Inc (www.sensorplatforms.com)
Sensor Platforms is a venture-financed company located in Silicon Valley that develops, for licensing, algorithmic software enabling consumer applications to better understand user contexts and intent.
The company’s FreeMotion™ Library makes sensor fusion and user context awareness available in smartphones and tablets, in order to: combine and process data from installed sensors and microprocessors; better interpret users’ movements and situations; and infer users’ intents.
The library makes it easy for device OEMs to purchase their sensors and microprocessors from multiple suppliers without damaging user experience. It also automatically optimizes sensor and platform power consumption based on user movement and contexts, to enable longer battery life.
To create the breadth of the FreeMotion library, the company has assembled a multi-disciplinary engineering team with proven track records in control systems, machine learning, mixed signal design, motion kinematics, real-time systems, semiconductor device physics, and signal processing.

The company is located at 2860 Zanker Road, #210, San Jose, CA 95134. For information: www.sensorplatforms.com/company/contact/.
